Talk with a Counselor

The school has also made resources available.  For more information, you can read Head of School Rebecca Upham's letter or call the service that the school has created at (617) 558-3901, ask to speak with the consulting psychiatrist, and identify yourself as someone seeking assistance arising out of experiences relating to Ted Washburn.

Follow this link for a description of the process, contact numbers, email addresses and where to send claims for payment or reimbursement.

An alumna, Lisa Cohen, class of '86, a psychologist specializing in trauma related to sexual abuse, is available to discuss the effects of Washburn's abuse.  Whether you are a alum, concerned about a classmate, family member, or a survivor, she may be able to shed some light on the situation.  Your inquiry will remain confidential. Email her at counselor@openingbbnminds.com

Individual Recovery

If you are a survivor, you may want to look at the testimonials that people have sent.

malesurvivor.org I attended their national conference in 2007.  The site has information about survivor workshops, a bulletin board and a list of resources.
nextstepcounseling.org  is located in Brookline and provides therapy with a specialty in male survivors of sexual abuse.  Mike Lew facilitated a workshop that I attended in October 2007 and I found him thoughtful and helpful. I recommend having consultations with a number of therapists before starting to work with one in particular.

Books

Half The House by Richard Hoffman.  A good novel about a man's maturation, during which he deals with an episode of childhood sexual abuse.

Victims No Longer The Classic Guide for Men Recovering from Sexual Child Abuse, by Mike Lew.  I have not read this but a few people have recommended it as a thoughtful and helpful book.

Legal Issues

Legal Representation  I would be happy to provide you with the names of a few attorneys that I contacted if you would like.  Attorneys differ in style, strategy and expertise and I suggest speaking with a few to find legal representation that is a good fit.

Massachusetts Sexual Offender Registry Board keeps a database of convicted sex offenders and classifies offenders so that the public knows about dangerous sex offenders in each community. Note that because Edward Washburn was classified as Level One, he does not appear on public views of the database.

Coalition to Reform Sex Abuse Laws in Massachusetts (www.corsal.org). We are organizing Massachusetts citizens and legislators to support the repeal of civil and criminal statutes of limitations on crimes of sexual assault and abuse.

Other Resources

Survivors Network for those Abused by Priests has information about current cases involving child sexual abuse that has occurred in institutional settings.  David Clohessy, the national director, has years of experience approaching institutions.

The two most helpful resources have been my sisters Jenni and Lizzie to whom I am forever grateful.
