Buckingham, Browne & Nichols (BB&N) is a private day school in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Across the river from Harvard University, the school is the result of a 1974 merger of two institutions which had been part of the Cambridge academic landscape for almost a century. The school has prepared many young men and women to enter top universities and colleges across the U.S. Members of the community -- and the BB&N community itself as a whole -- are urged to exemplify the school's motto:
Honor, Scholarship, and Kindness
Edward Washburn joined the BB&N faculty in 1965. He began teaching English to 7th and 8th graders around the time of the 1974 merger. During the same period, on trips in New England, Washburn encouraged students to engage in sexual activities in his presence. By 1985, Washburn was molesting young boys in his Lexington home. In 1987, Washburn was charged with raping two boys by the Middlesex Country District Attorney's office. Washburn pleaded guilty and received a suspended sentence.
Opening BB&N Minds was launched in 2008 to remind the community of BB&N's values.
Honor
Opening BB&N minds urges the people who made errors of judgement under the Washburn Administration to offer their support to the men and women who when they were children suffered because of those mistakes.
Scholarship
Scholarship requires a commitment to truth and honesty.
Kindness
Opening BB&N Minds supports the men and women who as children experienced the cruelty of Ted Washburn.
You were not alone then and you are not alone today.
You have the public support of classmates, friends, parents and teachers.
