Opening BB&N Minds

Buckingham, Browne & Nichols (BB&N) is a private day school in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Across the river from Harvard University, the school is the result of a 1974 merger of two institutions which had been part of the Cambridge academic landscape for almost a century.

Edward Washburn joined the BB&N faculty in 1965.  He began teaching English to 7th and 8th graders around the time of the 1974 merger.  During the same period, on trips in New England, Washburn encouraged students to engage in sexual activities in his presence.

By 1985, Washburn was molesting young boys in his Lexington home.  In 1987, Washburn was charged with raping two boys by the Middlesex Country District Attorney's office. Washburn pleaded guilty and received a suspended sentence.

This site is guided by the School's principles: Honesty, Scholarship & Kindness

Honesty

Honesty requires the School to honor its commitments.

Scholarship

Scholarship addresses the situation with reason and with perspective, free of sentiment.

Kindness

Kindness extends respect and compassion to everyone affected by Washburn -- survivors, their families, faculty and administrators.

Pursuit of honesty and scholarship without kindness is no virtue.  Pursuit of kindness without honesty and scholarship is almost a vice.

School Progress Reports

In October, 2008, the School committed to making changes to prevent a similar situation of abuse, or the subsequent failure to address it.  You can view the progress on the Report Card page.

Media Coverage

In May 2009, Fox News featured a report Sex Scandal Resurfaces on Washburn's crimes and the School's response.  You can view the report by going to the Media page.

Collection of Testimonials

I've created a collection of testimonials.

It contains about 45 pages - 15,000 words - of support.  I will be working on it through December - and hope to receive a few new ones in the interim.  Click on the icon to download the pdf.
